Day 3

ibstokes

Today was a pretty interesting day. We spent most of it learning about the water in the Dayton area, and how we work to protect and manage it. We also did a activity where we wrote a story about the water cycle; the story we made is posted above.

First what we did was split into small groups. Then each group would rotate through each activity. The first activity that my group went to was the one where we learned about the water cycle. We learned about water sheds, which is basically the system where all of the water flows into a larger body of water. We then learned about the Miami Valley Aquifer, which is a giant collection of groundwater. It basically was formed millions of years ago when giant glaciers deposited a lot of sediments and sand, which allowed rain water to collect. This groundwater is where Dayton and the Dayton area get all of their water.

The second station that we went to, they showed us about how they use robots to inspect sewers. We learned that there are over 700 miles of sewage pipes in the Dayton area, and in order to inspect and check on those pipes, they use robots to go into the pipes and inspect. These robots are connected to a truck, that controls it using video footage, and with that, they control the robot, kind of like a RC car. I thought it was pretty cool, because they could use a robot to go into spaces that people can't and find problems that need to be fixed in the sewers.

Then the next place that we went to was this big truck, called the Rivermobile. It is a giant trailer that is an education center, and inside they teach about the history of the Miami valley, and all of the floods that have occurred. We also learned about how everything that we do that affects the water in Dayton, can essentially effect the whole world. That's because the water from the Miami flows into the Ohio River, which then flows into the Mississippi River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico, which connects to the Atlantic, which connects to all of the other oceans.

Then we went back inside, and we learned about jobs in the Dayton Water Treatment. We learned about what they do on a daily basis, and the type of skills that we need to have. I thought this was the most interesting thing because I learned about how jobs that are in this profession and the type of skills that are required.

In conclusion, today was a pretty fun day and I learned a lot of things.
